In Costa Rica, as in other Latin American countries, there are various programs and support networks for the care of the elderly. But we can not ignore the difficult role of care that many families face daily and the conflicts that often arise among the relatives who are responsible for this responsibility.

In all our years of experience in Superdomesticas.com placing staff, we have seen how every day clients ask us for workers to care for the elderly. Some of these brave women are only engaged in this activity, with a great vocation and empirical experience that they have been acquiring on the fly, but with little or no training. In our agency we have acquired knowledge and developed a specialized methodology for the recruitment and selection of this type of personnel, trying to satisfy the needs of our clients.

We have prepared “Workshops for the Care of Elderly People”, given by professionals in the field of health and aimed at domestic employees and other interested people, not professionals in this field. The objective of this training is to provide essential basic knowledge, focused on teaching management techniques and attention, to technify the trade for the welfare of these beloved adults. It includes topics such as knowing their emotional state, body mechanics, bathing technique, skin care and sore prevention, nutrition and healthy eating, administration of medications and others.

We have maintained a close relationship with our clients, proven how it is difficult for them to assume and adapt to this stage of care with their various ailments. Those are reasons why we support and advise you constantly, with recommendations such as the following:

  1. Make a list of needs, activities and your budget.
  2. Give affection and sincere love because it is the best physical and spiritual medicine for the elderly.
  3. Evaluate the option of hiring a responsible agency that provides care staff.
  4. Seek institutional support, do not miss any medical appointments and follow the recommendations.
  5. Consult a professional in nutrition to avoid major complications.
  6. Organize and really determine what each family member can contribute.
  7. Take precautions to avoid risks of falls or other types of accidents.
  8. Keep the elderly person active: physically, socially and mentally.
  9. Take him or bring him a friend or family member, this will revive him safely.
  10. Avoid family confrontations, be positive and seek family unity.

We hope that these tips are useful for the reader and bear in mind that undoubtedly, tomorrow we will be the ones who will take their place and from now on we must generate a family culture of care and appreciation towards our golden citizens.
